Foundations Module: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I view the Foundations Module notebooks outside of the ADRF?

Even though the LAUS data used in the Foundations Module is public, we still recommend that all work for this module (including viewing the notebooks) be done inside of the ADRF. When we are working with the confidential microdata in the second half of this course, all materials and results must be viewed inside the ADRF, so it is better to start learning how to work in the secure environment now, rather than struggling later on when you want to be making progress with your team. We understand that working inside the ADRF can be frustrating, however - please let us know if you would like to meet to discuss additional tips and tricks that might make this process either. We will also cover several of these in class.

Why do the notebooks look so terrible, and all in black and white?

You might be having this experience if you opened the notebook html files with the default browser in the ADRF - Internet Explorer. We highly encourage you to right click on the notebooks and then select “Open with -> Chrome” - they should look much better!

Why are we using the LAUS data? I thought we were using confidential microdata for this course?

We use the LAUS data in the first half of this course so that we can get used to working in a secure environment without incurring any kind of disclosure risk. Once we get to Module 2, we will begin working with confidential microdata provided by the state of Arkansas.

What is the structure of the Foundations Module?

The Foundations Module follows a “flipped” class structure, where you are expected to review all the materials for a given unit before the class meeting for that unit. For example, you should both watch the Unit 1 introduction videos and review the Unit 1 notebook before first actual day of Foundations Module class. This allows us to use the class time as more of an “office hours”, addressing any issues or questions that might have come up throughout the week.

I am having issues with my ADRF password - please help!

While any of the Coleridge staff will be happy to assist you, the fastest way to address this (or any other technical issue) is to create a support ticket by emailing support@coleridgeinitiative.org.
